Welcome to the May Edition of Sierra Toy Soldier News, written on a gorgeous spring day here in the Bay Area. Lots of sunshine, not a cloud in the sky and temperatures in the high 80’s. Perfect, except, of course we are all doing our bit, and sheltering in place.

These days we shelter in place at home, but we are lucky enough to drive to the warehouse, and shelter in place there. Like you we will be so glad when things can start opening up, and things move forward. For us it looks like the Bay Area may start to open up at the end of the month, and we hope to have the team in place and be able reopen the store and get back to something approaching normal.

In the meantime the warehouse is open Monday to Friday for Online, Phone, Mail Orders and of course Curbside Pick up. Thank you to all for the requests to come visit our showroom, sorry that at this time the showroom has to remain closed.

We are receiving our restock shipments from our suppliers on a consistent although understandably delayed basis. The good news is everything is getting through, eventually

Thank you for all the orders. As we are unable to have our young crew in, it has just been the two of us working long hours to get your packages out to locations all over the USA and World Wide. It seems many of you are at home revisiting your collections and totally enjoying them all over again. The quality and variety has certainly never been better. Thank you for the support.

We have some great new announcements from King & country, John Jenkins, Thomas Gunn, Corgi, plus sale items from First Legion and King & Country. Now is a great time to treat yourself and add to your collection. Between First Legion and King and Country, there are some terrific bargains, which many of you have already taken advantage of.

Stay safe, and look forward to summer days.

Ancient Egypt

  • - Building Pyramids and other great monuments for the Pharaohs was thirsty work and the workers needed something more than just plain water to slake their thirst... Here a young woman is hard at work making a large jar of locally brewed beer for the toiling workers. As you can see it’s hard work toiling away under a blazing hot sun... hence the maiden’s minimal use of clothing!
  • - While walking down to the Nile to enjoy a morning swim this young princess of the Royal House and her Maid discover a wicker basket among the bulrushes... Inside, a young baby. Alas, in those days, it was not uncommon for poor slaves and peasants to abandon extra children or unwanted babes into the Nile in the hopes that they would find a welcome or a refuge with wealthier Nile dwellers elsewhere. The biblical story of Moses being found in a basket by the Nile is probably the most famous example.

Battle of Little Big Horn

  • - One additional mounted Sioux warrior taking part in the most momentous battle of the ‘Indian Wars’ in the years that followed the end of the Civil War. Another dynamic and colourful addition to this ‘Battle of the little Bighorn’ series.

Battle of Little Big Horn June 25/26, 1876.

World of Dickens

Although Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous detective creation was Mr. Sherlock Holmes several other sleuths also appeared in his novels to occasionally assist (and sometimes hamper) the great detective in his work and criminal deliberations. Among the most famous were...

In fiction Lestrade appears in no less than 13 of the Sherlock Holmes tales and is described as ‘one of Scotland Yard’s finest detectives’. That being said he is often portrayed as solid, reliable but lacking the almost superhuman knowledge and imagination of Holmes himself. However, he’s always useful as a ‘good man to have around’ in a difficult or violent situation.

Lestrade’s contemporary and fellow Scotland Yard detective is ‘Inspector Bradstreet’, who worked out of Bow Street Police Station and was member of the Metropolitan Police’s ‘B’ Division.

Physically, he is a contrast to the slim, slightly built Lestrade – Bradstreet is big and well-built and often wears a tweed suit which might indicate a more rural upbringing and early life.

Both fictional detectives have also appeared in several films and television series about Mr. Holmes & Dr. Watson’s many adventures.

Australian Light Horse

One of K&C’s, biggest and most popular ‘Australians at War’ series is the charge of the Australian Light Horse at the Battle of Beersheba in 1917 in what was then Palestine during the First World War.

Six Day War

While we await the arrival of the Israeli ‘Centurion’ here’s a little advance party of Israeli paratroopers leading the way.

  • - A three-man group of IDF paratroopers cautiously move forward while ‘scouting’ out the enemy. The Team Leader carries the recently introduced AR15 Carbine while the other two Paras carry the standard Israeli version of the FN 7.62 Self Loading Rifle. A great (and useful) little 3-man set ready for action... anywhere... any time!

Vietnam

American artillery played a vital role in the U.S. effort in South East Asia.... especially in defense of ‘firebases’ the length and breadth of South Vietnam. Among the most utilized artillery pieces that operated in the conflict was the venerable, WW2 era, 105mm Howitzer. Here is K&C’s second version, the first was the recently-released ‘ANZAC 105’ set.

  • - That’s quite a mouthful... but then it’s also quite a set too. The K&C ‘105’ comes with 4 x USMC Gunners to serve and operate the gun. The 105mm M10A1 Howitzer was an artillery piece that began as the standard U.S. field howitzer of WW2. It also saw extensive battlefield service in Korea and Vietnam with both the U.S. Army and the USMC as well as with other Allied nations’ armies. Our USMC version has 4 x Marines serving the gun and will also have future extra ‘add-on’ sets to complete the gun in action.
  • - Two more ‘Grunts’ to help complete the scene... One marine carries more shells forward while a kneeling Marine radio operator relays coordinates and instructions from H.Q. for more ‘fire-missions’.
Special Note: The special ‘half-moon’ sandbag revetment will be available in June plus a set of extra ammo as well as discarded empty shell cases is also ‘in the works’.

Ceremonial

The ROYAL MARINES are the UK’s Commando Force and the Royal Navy’s own amphibious troops. Founded in 1664 they are one of the world’s oldest and most elite fighting forces and optimise Britain’s global military rapid response with the unique ability to handle a wide spectrum of threats and security challenges.

Since their foundation the ‘Royals’ have seen action in every corner of the world throughout the centuries, from the ‘Seven Years War’ all the way up to the more recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

During that time thy have formed close military ties with other allied Marine forces, particularly the United States Marine Corps and the Dutch Korps Mariners.

TRADITIONS & UNIFORMS

The Royal Marines have a long and proud history with many unique traditions. Their latin motto, ‘Per Mare Per Terram’ translates as ‘By Sea and By Land’.

This aptly describes their capability to fight as well on land or at sea as the situation demands.

The Royal Marine cap badge shows a British Lion atop a royal crown sitting above a globe of the world surrounded by a laurel wreath.

Their distinctive dark blue ‘parade dress’, as shown on our new figures, is usually worn with the ‘Wolseley’ pattern pith helmet.

All of these new K&C marines are carrying the older L1A1 Self Loading Rifles with fixed bayonets which remained in British military service from the late 1950’s up until the early 1980’s.

Numidians

The Numidians were the Berber population of Numidia (present day Algeria and in a smaller part of Tunisia). The Numidians were one of the earliest Berber tribes to trade with the settlers of Carthage, and as Carthage grew , the relationship with the Numidians blossomed. Carthage’s military used the Numidian cavalry as mercenaries. Numidia provided some of the highest quality cavalry of the second Punic war, and the Numidian cavalry played a key role in a number of battles, both early on in support of Hannibal and later in the war after switching allegiances, to the Roman Republic.

Numidian

Spanish

There is some confusion over the precise identity of the Spanish troops that fought in the Punic Wars. The original inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula were the Iberians, a Caucasoid people who were famed as warriors, and who served as mercenaries in many parts of the Mediterranean world. They served as mercenaries in the Carthaginian armies from at least 342BC.

By the 3rd Century BC the Celts,9who had invaded from the North) and Iberians had merged to form a distinctive new people in the north east and central plateau of the peninsula, known as the Celt-Iberians. The Celt-Iberians fought for the Carthaginians and by the time of the 2nd Punic War it is thought that both soldiers were similar in appearance and equipment.

Hampton's Legion South Carolina Zouave Volunteers

Wade Hampton III (March 28, 1818-April 11 1902) was a Confederate military officer during the American Civil War and politician from South Carolina. He came from a wealthy planter family. When the war began he resigned from the South Carolina Senate and enlisted as a private in the South Carolina Militia. The governor of South Carolina was to insist that Hampton accept a Colonel’s commission, as although with no military experience it was regarded that his years of managing plantations and serving in state government were considered signs of leadership. Hampton was to organize and partially finance the unit known as “Hampton’s Legion”, which consisted of six companies of infantry, four of cavalry and one battery of artillery.

Hampton’s first combat came at the First battle of Manassas, where he deployed his legion at a decisive moment, reinforcing a confederate line that was retreating from Buck Hill, which gave the brigade of Thomas J. Jackson time to reach the field and make his defensive stand.

The Big Sale - Has been extended, but we expect this to end in the next couple of weeks, so do not miss out.

Yes, you read that right, FL are indeed holding an extremely limited time one-off sale of a staggering number of products. Given the current world situation with the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, our ability to produce new figures has been impacted and there will be some significant delays to getting new products to market. Rest assured, new products are being worked on, but given travel restrictions we simply have no way to conduct inspections and quality control and we cannot know when this situation will be resolved. So during this time we have decided to thank our loyal customers with a one-off sale of over 800 different products with discounts ranging from 25-50%! We want there to be something for everyone, so we have discounted products in almost every figure series that we make, so if there is a series that you have always wanted to get into, now is a great time to get started. If you have never collected First Legion, this is a wonderful opportunity to start and see firsthand the quality of our figures at amazing prices. It has been eloquently expressed to us that we don't sell figures, we sell "escapism." So during this difficult time, with nearly everyone spending long periods of time indoors, we want to offer the escapism that is the wonerful world of toy soldier collecting at a fraction of the normal cost. The sale will run for a limited time after which pricing will return to normal for whatever inventory remains. This will literally be a once in a lifetime opportunity to get First Legion figures at a fraction of their normal prices!

At the Battle for Iwo Jima, Jacobson's battalion was held up by several Japanese bunkers and could not advance further. Jacobson took a Bazooka forward and destroyed 16 enemy emplacements with his Bazooka and killed 75 Japanese soldiers in the process. For this series of events he was awarded the Medal of Honour by President Truman in October 1945. He was still only 19 years old when he received the award, a great example of true grit in the face of adversity.

African Wars

  • - A dramatic pose and the writing is certainly on the wall for this British soldier as he takes an Asseagi in the back.
  • - This soldier stands ready to repel the Zulus, his ammunition expended he prepares to use cold steel!
  • - This soldier reaches for more ammunition as the Zulus close in. Lest hope he has enough ammo to keep the Zulus at bay!
  • - A brave Tommy tries to pull a wounded mounted trooper out of harms way, he is using his rifle with bayonet fitted to keep the Zulus at bay.
  • - A dramatic pose with an officer holding the Queens Colours and a kneeling Private in the kneeling repel position. The officer's uniform is based to a degree on a certain young British actor Michael Caine who appeared in the 'Zulu' film of 1964. The flag is hand painted except for the numerals which are decals.
  • - A Zulu warrior stands stands with Asseagi raised shouting at the British to take their best shot!
  • - A crouching Zulu takes cover behind his shield as he surveys the battlefield.
