Welcome to the March Edition of the Sierra Toy Soldier News. Written on the first dry day we have had in the Bay Area for ages. Some spring we are having, huh? We have been pummeled with storms recently classified as atmospheric rivers that carry tons of rain and snow. In the 33 years we have lived in the Bay Area we have never experienced storms like this or as strong. The upside is that for half of the state the drought has ended and with more rain on its way the whole state could be clear by the end of winter. Skiing has been great for those few that could travel to the mountains.

Thank you to all that made the effort to visit the West Coaster show during a huge storm in southern California. Attendance was up for the Sunday event. It was great to see you all again.

Our next show will be Memorial Day weekend, in San Antonio Texas. Details we hope to announce in the next newsletter. The Chicago Toy Soldier Show will not be happening in September, due to issues with the hotel. Good news there will be a new show in Chicago, with the same dates but different venue. Final details to be confirmed.

It is the 20th Anniversary of the Sierra Toy Soy Soldier Company this year, and they said it would never last. We were formed in May 2003. Time certainly flies when you are having fun, but it went by very fast. To celebrate with you we are offering a special 20% discount on many items not normally on sale. Currently we have just offered this on John Jenkins’ items, so please visit our Jenkins Sale page for some real goodies.

  • - Restock
  • - Military engineering is the oldest of the engineering arts and was the precursor of the profession of civil engineering. Construction of fortifications, roads, bridges, camouflaging positions, surveying, and mapping are the province of military engineers. Because they were in the vanguard of any military force these soldiers were called “pioneers.” Their main weapons were the pick, axe, and shovel. Pictured in this grouping are four wicker gabions filled with earth and rock. The empty, pre-woven cylinders were light and would be carried in the ammunition train to be brought up to the front lines where the engineers would fill them, creating protection for siege guns and forward troops.

Ancient Egypt

The discovery of the young pharaoh’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings in 1922 brought many visitors and spectators to the site from far and wide and included some notable characters among them…

The Real West

United States Navy

  • - A marching ‘Bluejacket’ sailor holding the 48-star national flag aloft.
  • - The U.S. Navy Infantry Battalion flag was for many decades, the actual flag of the U.S. Navy as a whole. The flag design of a navy blue, fouled anchor on a white diamond on top of a navy blue field dates back to the mid-late 19th century. Although it was superceded by a whole new design in 1959 this particular flag was in common usage throughout the period our K&C ‘Bluejackets’ represent i.e. the 1920s up until the late 1950s.

Bismark

Otto von Bismarck can easily lay claim to being one of the greatest giants of history of the 19th Century. As the mastermind of the unification of Germany in 1871 he was to go on and dominate European affairs for almost two decades before resigning in 1890.

The Royals

Vietnam

The Vietnam War is often known as the “Helicopter War” as it was the first time in human history large numbers of helicopters were used in all kinds of combat roles and employing many different types and sizes of helicopters. Of all the different machines operated during the war the vast majority were the several variations of the Bell UH-1 ‘Iriquois’ better known as the ‘Huey’.

  • - Two standing ‘Chopper’ pilots looking over a flight plan. The more senior is shown wearing the famous Stetson U.S. Cavalry hat and is obviously a member of the ‘AirCav’. The other pilot is wearing his ‘bonedome’ and the standard flight suit complete with some body armour and a side arm. Sidenote: At present K&C is also hard-at-work on our own mass-production UH-1 ‘Huey’ which we hope to release later in 2023 or early 2024.
  • - Just as important as the aircrew that flew the Hueys were the groundcrew guys who serviced them and kept them in the air. This Air Cav. Crew Chief is going through a check list on the ground before a flight.

Pirates

Though pirates have existed throughout history, from ancient times to modern day, the ‘golden age’ of piracy was the 17th and early 18th century, thriving in particular on the plunder of rich Spanish trade and supply routes from the New World to the Old. Countless Spanish galleons, holds bursting with newly minted gold and silver coin mined from the rich deposits discovered in Peru, Mexico and Bolivia, plied the Atlantic en route to the court of the Spanish king. The plunder was so rich that some 5,000 or more pirates were believed to be active at the time, even establishing whole land based pirate communities such as the island of Hispaniola and Tortuga. Infamous pirates of the time included Henry Morgan, Captain Kidd, Jack Rackham and the most feared of them all, the ruthless Blackbeard (Edward Teach). Drifting into fiction we will also be covering Stevenson’s anti-hero Long John Silver, perhaps best known for his wooden leg and trusty parrot, Captain Flint, with a penchant for pieces of eight. These are our first characters to get the range going. We will in time be adding more pirates as well as everything else you would expect from a fully-fledged pirate range such as colonial troops, marines and sailors, red-coated garrison forces and much more. We just can’t wait to get to the main feature of this range, the ships.
