Welcome to the Summer edition of Sierra Toy Soldier News. Written on a very warm day here in the Bay Area. Of course, the wildfires are still going strong, all up and down the west coast. Luckly so far, the smoke has not drifted into the Bay, so it is a wonderful time to come and visit us and also see the rest of San Francisco.
We have just received a collection of King and Country Crusaders on Consignment. All are brand new, in mint condition with boxes. Cody will be working on listing and cataloging them in early August. Please check our Collectors Corner for updates.
Our warehouse will be closed to visitors from Tuesday 22nd July until Wednesday 30th July. Just during the week so our team can take a break and enjoy a summer vacation. The phones, email and web site will all be operational.
We have some great announcements from Britains, John Jenkins, Team Minitures and Thomas Gunn.
Check out our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for more pictures.

Roger's Rangers
Of the several companies of Rangers raised during the French & Indian War, Rogers’ Rangers have attracted the most publicity over the years. Originally known as the Ranger Company of Blanchard’s New Hampshire Regiment, it was expanded to seven companies and became known as His Majesty’s Independent Company of Rangers. Paid by the Crown, these were not regular or provincial troops, consequently there was little uniformity in dress or equipment. However, it is known that a quantity of green jackets was made up and worn by the Rangers from 1758 onwards. Vests or sleeved jackets were worn under these coats, with the lower part of the clothing consisting of buckskin breeches worn with woolen stockings, shoes, or moccasins. In the field, native style leggings or gaiters were worn over the stockings to further protect the lower legs. Head wear included cut down felt hats and Scottish style bonnets.

Aircraft Collection
ACE-211 represents the FW 190A-8/R-11, W.Nr. 29210, “White 9” from 1./NJG 10 which was flown by Ofw. Gunther Migge, at Werneuchen 1944. Photographs from the period show the plane is equipped with the radar system FuG 218 Neptun J3, and was further modified with a pair of flame damper fins over the exhaust stacks. The emblem on the cowling originated with JG 300 and symbolized the unit’s “Wild Sau” tactics.

Gladiators
"HAIL, EMPEROR, THOSE WHO ARE ABOUT TO DIE SALUTE YOU."
Gladiators were armed combatants who entertained audiences in the Roman Republic and Roman Empire in violent confrontations with other gladiators, wild animals and condemned criminals. Some gladiators were volunteers who risked their lives and their legal and social standing by appearing in the arena, but most were despised as slaves, schooled under harsh conditions, socially marginalized and even segregated even in death.
Irrespective of their origin, gladiators offered spectators an example of Rome’s martial ethics and in fighting or dying well, they could inspire admiration and popular acclaim. They were celebrated in high and low art, and their value as entertainers was commemorated in precious and commonplace objects throughout the Roman world.

GLAD-007 The Myrmillo - The myrmillo, also spelled murmillo, or mirmillones, was a gladiator developed to replace the earlier Gallic type gladiators , which were named after the warriors of Gaul. The name Myrmillo originated with the Greek word “mormyrus” which was a type of fish. The myrmillo gladiators often wore a Gallic helmet incorporating fish imagery.

Macedonian
The Argyraspides were elite Macedonian soldiers who carried silver plated shields. The original unit were Hypaspists serving in the army of Alexander the Great. They were a division of the Macedonian army, and were picked men commanded by Nicanort, the son of Parmenio, as well as Seleucus, and were held in high honour by Alexander. They were hypaspists, having changed their name to the Argyraspides whilst in India under Alexander.
Nicanor, was a distinguished officer in the service of Alexander the Great. He is first mentioned at the passage of the Danube river, in the expedition of Alexander against the Getae, 335, when he led the phalanx. During the expedition into Asia he appears to have held the chief command of the Hypaspists. It is mentioned of him holding this post in the three great battles of the Granicus, Issus and of Gaugamela.
He was to accompany Alexander during the rapid march in pursuit of the king Darius III Codmannus in 330. This was probably his last service, as he was to die of disease shortly afterwards, during the advance into Bactria. His death at this time was considered a fortunate event, as it prevented him from participating either in the designs or the fate of his brother Philotas.

Samnite Warriors
The Samnites and their relatives in central and south Italy are known as Oscans, from the name of their language. The Samnites were the largest and most important Oscan nation, and was made up of a league of four tribes, the Pentri, Caudidi, Hirpini and Caraceni.
The Samnites fought a series of wars with Rome from 343 to 272, and were by far Rome’s most formidable Italian foe. Many Samnites were later to join Hannibal.
