Welcome to the late July edition of Sierra Toy Soldier News written on a steaming hot 105-degree day here in the Bay Area. We have had this heat wave for nearly a month now and it is totally unusual. In most summers we have one or two days of 100-degree weather, not 30. We are ready to welcome winter back.
On a recent road trip Alex and Cody picked up a huge collection of Britains and King & Country. Cody is currently preparing pictures and info for the website. You will see updates in our Collectors Corner section. Do not miss out.

Battle of Mogadishu, 1993
SOMALIA in East Africa during the early 1990s was a ‘basket case’ of a country. Years of vicious tribal warfare between rival clans had caused a famine on a truly biblical scale. Already more than 300,000 civilians, many of them, women and children, had died of starvation.
One particular clan leader, Mohammed Farrah Aidid, the most powerful of the Somali warlords, ruled the country from its capital Mogadishu. From there he had been seizing most of the international food shipments arriving by sea and air from a shocked and sympathetic world. America and the United Nations had then dispatched troops to the war-torn country to stop the stealing and help distribute the food to those who needed it most. And for a time that worked until most of these forces, including the Americans. Almost immediately the plunder of the food aid began again and the situation went from bad to worse…
AUGUST 1993
As conditions worsened the U.S. once more dispatched a small force of some of best fighting units to Mogadishu. These included a Delta Forces team… the 160th SOAR (Special Operations Aviation Regiment) flying a mix of helicopters including the powerful UH-60 Blackhawk and men from the 75th Ranger Regiment. All of these troops had a clear, simple mission… Remove Aidid from power and restore order!’ Over the course of the following weeks and then several months that mission statement was to lead to one particular day when everything that could go wrong did go wrong in a military operation, This has been documented in great detail, first in a best-selling book by author Mark Bowden and then a block-buster movie directed by Ridley Scott. Here is your first look at the ‘Advance Party’ of K&C’s BLACK HAWK DOWN!

Everything is carefully packed in a sturdy, full colour presentation box and the perfect accompaniment for K&C’s own ‘Cattle Drive’ figures and Texas Longhorns.

Vietnam
Among the most iconic sights and sounds, of the Vietnam War one in particular stands head and shoulders above all the rest… That of the BELL UH-1 ‘IRIQUOIS’ Helicopter better known to the world at large and the ‘Grunts’ on the ground as the ‘HUEY’.
No one can imagine the Vietnam conflict without the distinctive shape and ‘whoop, whoop’ sound of this iconic aircraft which revolutionized warfare by performing an incredible variety of vital military tasks.
The ‘HUEY’ transported troops, supplies, arms and ammunition, evacuated wounded and dozens of other missions in all types of weather over all kinds of terrain night and day between 1962 and 1975.
During that time over 7,000 ‘HUEYS’ flew over Vietnam with more than 3,300 lost-in-action alongwith 1151 pilots and copilots. In addition another 1,231 crew members were killed and those figures do not include ARVN (Army of the Republic of Vietnam) aircrew!
Just 200 of each of these first two 1:30 scale ‘HUEYS’ are being produced. Both models include pilot and copilot figures and comes packed in a sturdy, full-colour presentation box with a numbered certificate.

Conquistadors
Becerrillo, a name meaning ‘Little Bull,’ was a brown-eyed, red pelted mastiff owned by Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León but often entrusted to the care of conquistadors Captain Diego Guilarte de Salazar and Sancho de Aragón. Becerrillo’s origins are uncertain, but it is believed he was born in the Americas in the kennels of Ponce de León. The earliest records of him date to 1511, but by then he was already described as sporting battle scars. The 16th-century Spanish historian and chronicler, Bartolomé de las Casas, reported that Becerrillo “attacked his enemies with frenzied rage and defended his friends with great courage…,” adding that the indigenous people were “more afraid of ten Spanish soldiers with Becerrillo than a hundred by themselves.” While Becerrillo had been trained to kill, one historical account, tells a tale of mercy. The conquistadors were camped outside the settlement of Caparra in Puerto Rico waiting for the arrival of the Spanish governor. Looking for something to amuse themselves, Salazar gave a folded piece of paper to an old woman, telling her to deliver it to the governor. As the woman began on her way, Salazar released Becerrillo commanding him to kill her. As the dog raced towards her, the woman dropped to her knees and was reported to have called out "Please, my Lord Dog. I am on my way to take this letter to Christians. I beg you, my Lord Dog, please do not hurt me." Becerrillo sniffed the woman and then, disobeying his master’s orders, turned and walked away. When the governor was told what had occurred, he released the old woman and forbade any further terrorizing of the locals, declaring “I will not allow the compassion and clemency of a dog to overshadow those of a real Christian.
The campaign of terror committed through Becerrillo came to an end one morning in 1514 when indigenous natives from the island of Vieques captured Sancho de Aragón. According to Spanish historian Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo y Valdés in his 1535 Historia, the dog pursued the attackers who had taken off in dugout canoes, by making his way through the water. Becerrillo became an easy target and was hit by a volley of arrows. Spanish soldiers cauterized his wounds, but he died shortly afterwards. He was given a secret burial and, according to Oviedo, was mourned more than their fallen comrades.

Greeks
Ajax was the son of Oileus, the king of Locris. He was called the “Ajax the Less”, the “Lesser” or “Locrian Ajax”, to distinguish him from Ajax The Great, son of Telamon. He was the leader of the Locrian contingent during the Trojan War.
Locrian Ajax was born in Naryx in Locris. According to the Iliad, he led his Locrians in forty ships against Troy. He is described as one of the great heroes among the Greeks. In battle, he wore a linen cuirass, was brave and intrepid, especially skilled in throwing the spear, and next to Achilles, the swiftest of all the Greeks. In the funeral games at the pyre of Patroclus, Ajax contended with Odysseus and Antilochus for the prize in the footrace, but Athena, who was hostile towards him and favoured Odysseus, made him stumble and fall, so that he won only second prize.

Norman Knights
Alan Rufus (c. 1040 -1093) was a Breton nobleman, cousin and companion of William the Conqueror during the Norman conquest of England. He was the second son of Eozen Penteur, a Count of Brittany, and an older maternal first cousin of Edward King of England.
During the Battle of Hastings, there is evidence that Alan Rufus led William’s Household Knights whilst Alan’s brother Breon led the left wing. This put Alan in the perfect position to co-ordinate feints with his brother. Breon would draw the inexperienced Saxon fyrdmen forward, and the other would follow in behind and isolate the pursuing Saxons. This was a modification of tactics used by the Bretons for many years. An example being the Battle of Jengland AD851. Several documents refer to Gyrth Godwinson, Harold’s younger brother and Earl of East Anglia, leading an assault on William’s position. William’s horse was cut down from under him, Gyrth seeing this moved to kill him, but someone stopped him, and Gyrth was killed instead. Without the experienced leadership of Gyrth at the front of the shield wall, and since Harold’s other younger brother Leofric Earl of Essex had already fallen, this probably proved decisive factor in the English defeat. William’s chroniclers say he cut down Gyrth, but Domesday evidence tells us that one of William’s Breton allies rode to his rescue, either Ralph “the Staller”, or Alan Rufus. Alan Rufus, and many of the Breton Knights were to be granted considerable land holdings by William the Conqueror in return for their services. Rufus would receive land in Northern England and later he would build Richmond Castle. Many of Alan Rufus’s early acquisitions in England included many land titles that had been in the possession of King Harold’s wife Edith the Fair, including all but one of her holdings in Cambridgeshire. By 1086 Alan had become one of the richest and most powerful men in England.

French Cipaye
The early French Cipayes, were similar to their British counterparts as they initially wore their own costume rather than a European style uniform. These figures are based on the well known Rousselot renderings, and are wearing a muslin headdress with a wide flat top which it is believed was intended to protect the wearer against sword cuts. The conventional long gown which was fastened by ties on the left hand side, and was worn tucked up around the hips. About 900 French Cipayes were positioned on a ridge slightly to the rear of the main French line. They were to take no part in the actual Battle of Wandewash. A further 300 Cipayes were left to guard the French camp.

Battle of Kharkov
The Third Battle of Kharkov took place in March 1943 during World War II and marked a pivotal moment on the Eastern Front. Initiated by the Soviet Union's Red Army in a bid to recapture the strategically significant city of Kharkov from German occupation, the battle unfolded amidst the harsh Ukrainian winter. Despite initial Soviet advances, the Germans launched a fierce counteroffensive, catching the Soviets off guard and inflicting heavy casualties. With some of the fiercest house to house fighting of the war, the Germans eventually cleared the city in the middle of March 1943. The 3rd Battle of Kharkov was the last major victory by the Germans on the Eastern Front.
