Hello and welcome to this mini-February edition of Sierra Toy Soldier News! February has been off to a hectic start as most of our state was placed on flood watch for a couple of days as a massive atmospheric river made landfall. Meteorologists in Lake Tahoe noted wind gusts of 148mph, comparable to a category 5 hurricane! Luckily in San Jose we only topped out at 59mph, thank goodness! The worst of the storm has finally passed, and we are happy to report that all our staff are doing well! We thank all of those who took the time out of their days to call or email us to check if we were okay.

We are currently in the middle of a bit of a lull as the factories in China have gone on holiday for Chinese New Year. For this reason, we have invested some time into increasing our presence on eBay. There, not only can you find our Sierra Toy Soldier exclusives, but you can also find plenty of items from W. Britains, John Jenkins Designs, and other manufacturers. Stay tuned as we continue to add more pieces to our eBay page!

In addition to increasing our eBay presence, starting this month we will also begin to highlight figures that we find a little more special. As many of you may know, Apple+ has begun releasing episodes to their new series “Masters of the Air.” This thrilling new series follows the extraordinary lives of the men who serves in the 100th Bomb Group, a B-17 Flying Fortress Heavy Bomber unit of the 8th Air Force flying out of Eastern England. Serving as a companion series to “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific,” this series brings a dose of reality to the nightmare that was the battle in the air. If this show has inspired you to start a new collection, or just adding to a new one, rest assured that we have you covered. The USAAF aircrew figures from Britains should help fill a display. These pieces are: BR10076: USAAF Bombardier, BR10077: USAAF Navigator, BR10078: USAAF Bomber Captain, BR10175: Heavy Bomber Crewman, and BR10176: USAAF Co-Pilot. We have also heard that there will be other figures, including ground crew, taking the fight to Germany, very soon, so please keep your eyes peeled.

Regarding Chinese New Year, some of the manufacturers, like King & Country, War Park, and Team Miniatures have all closed shop for this month, so there will be no new announcements for them in this newsletter. However, W. Britains and Thomas Gunn have provided us with some offerings that we hope you will enjoy.

Lastly, we would also like to remind you that we will officially be attending this year’s West Coast Toy Soldier show down in Pasadena, California. Cody and Alex will be making the long journey down the coast where they will be doing a little bit of room trading before the official show on Sunday, March 4th. • - Deadly with both swords and fast as lighting, Ambidextrous rules the arena, fighting other Gladiators, the mighty beasts, or Rome's enemies, he looks truly excellent and is well equipped for the job. We hope ‘you are entertained’ by our new first release Gladiator or equally, he could be a mercenary serving in Rome's army, after all the Romans employed thousands of mercenaries and what's not to like about this one in his striking helmet and blue tunic?

Enemies of Rome

WWII - The Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA)

The ATA was a British civilian organization set up at the beginning of WW2, headquarters were at White Waltham Airfield in Berkshire. The ATA ferried new, repaired and damaged military aircraft between factories, assembly plants, transatlantic delivery points, maintenance units, scrapyards, and active service squadrons and airfields, but not to naval aircraft carriers. Also ferrying service personnel and performed some air ambulance work. During the war around 10% of ATA pilots were women, were 168 female pilots, one in eight of all ATA pilots, and they volunteered from Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the United States, the Netherlands and Poland. The female pilots nicknamed "Attagirls" had a high profile in the press and from 1943 they received equal pay to their male colleagues, a first for the British government.

The Special Operations Executive (SOE)

The SOE WAS created in July 1940 under the Ministry of Economic Warfare and was a secret WW2 British organization. Its purpose was to conduct espionage, sabotage and reconnaissance in occupied Europe and later, also in occupied Southeast Asia. Members of SOE were sometimes referred to as the "Baker Street Irregulars", after the location of its London headquarters. The organization was dissolved in January 1946. There were 1,300 brave men and women who served in the SOE, from many different nationalities, with 200 being women. Their weapons were their bravery and guile, and rightly so there are a number of memorials. The official memorial to all those who served in the SOE in WW2 was unveiled in February 1996, on the wall of the west cloister of Westminster Abbey west Cloister, by Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. Based on the Albert Embankment in London, unveiled in 2009, the Valençay SOE Memorial honours the 104 SOE agents who lost their lives while working in France. The Tempsford Memorial was unveiled on 3 December 2013 by the then Charles, Prince of Wales, now King Charlies III, in Church End, Tempsford, Bedfordshire, close to the site of RAF Tempsford. Where many of the SOE left for their missions in occupied Europe.
