Welcome to the February Edition of Sierra Toy Soldier News, written on a really cold day here in the bay area. It is freezing and at the same time we have a beautiful blue sky. The rain, as is typical, has stopped but we are all hoping for more.

We recovered from our great flood; it took ages to get sorted but we are pretty much there. Just hope the insurance company cooperates. This week we have been preparing for the West Coaster Toy soldier show. We hope you are planning on coming as it can be tremendous fun, plus you get to meet all of us.

In January we produced two newsletters because there were so many releases. If you missed them, you view them here.

Art of War / Clash of Empires

Samuel Miles (1739–1805) was appointed by the Pennsylvania General Assembly on 13 March 1776 to be colonel of the rifle regiment “formed for the defense of Pennsylvania proper.” Miles’s state regiment consisted of two battalions of riflemen, each commanded by a lieutenant colonel. The regiment joined the flying camp at Perth Amboy, New Jersey, sometime in July 1776, and by 12 August it was in New York. At the Battle of Long Island on 27 August, the regiment was cut off by Hessian troops, and many of its officers and men, including Miles, were taken prisoner. In spite of his vigorous efforts to be exchanged, Miles remained a prisoner until April 1778. Based on the Soldier Study by Don Troiani Mile’s Pennsylvania State Rifle Regiment, 1776

  • - A pioneer, also referred to as a sapper or engineer, was a soldier who performed a variety of military engineering duties. First used by the French army, a pioneer was one who dug trenches to allow besieging forces to advance towards the enemy defensive works and forts. Referred to as "sapping,” the pioneers would dig a zig-zag channel parallel to the enemy fortifications over ground that would be under the defender’s constant musket and artillery fire. For this the sapper was considered an elite fighting man and would receive "danger pay” as well as additional perquisites. Seen here is one such Mexican Infantry Pioneer as he would have looked during the Battle of the Alamo, 1836.
  • - In the 19th century, drums were an invaluable communication device for soldiers in camp and on the battlefield. The drummer’s tool of war was a snare drum with a deep shell and a broad, resonant sound. Each drummer was required to learn dozens of rudiments and drum calls. Each call would tell the soldiers that they were required to perform a specific task or assemble into a precise formation. Seen here is a Mexican Drummer as he would have appeared during The Battle of the Alamo, 1836. As was military custom, his red tunic with blue facings is in the opposite colors of the rest of his compatriots. This made him recognizable on a chaotic battlefield and, as he would be stationed near an officer, a rallying point.

King & Country February Releases!

German Tiger I

Presenting King & Country’s twentieth Tiger tank model and our best one yet! Peas note this is a very limited release and is availavle for Pre Order. Delivery expected starting in April 2023!

This great ‘Winter Tiger’ is in the markings the 1st SS Panzer Division Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler the premier Waffen SS Division fighting in Russia in the winter of 1942/43.

The Panzerkampfwagen VI better known as the ‘TIGER’ was one of the most powerful tanks of the Second World War… and, arguably, the most famous!

Conceived as a response to the heavily – armoured Soviet tanks the Germans encountered following their invasion of Russia in June 1941 the new ‘TIGER’ completely outclassed its Red Army opposition when it first appeared on the battlefield in 1942.

Its incredibly thick armour was almost impossible to penetrate by all existing anti-tank weapons of that time. Mounting a tank version of the superb 88mm Flak 36 its combination of a flat trajectory with a high muzzle velocity and an excellent Leitz gun sight made it both powerful and deadly accurate!
