Medical Series by Britains

At the start of the American Civil War there were not even 100 surgeons in all of the Union Army. The ambulance did not even exist. Care of the wounded on the battlefield was often an afterthought with the weakest and least disciplined soldiers tasked with clearing the wounded. This was clearly not a morale boost to the soldiers. As the war progressed things changed with the advent of a number of different types of Ambulance wagons, the most successful being the Rucker. Stretcher teams began to be recruited from the bravest and most fearless soldiers and the ranks of surgeons, nurses and stewards grew exponentially. Our new series pays tribute to the men, women and equipment of the Union Medical Corps.
