Erwin von Witzleben was a German field marshal and Knights Cross recipient. Prior to WW2 Witzleben has been involved in two plots to remove Hitler but both had fallen through and had not progressed to a meaningful stage. I think its fair to say Witzleben was not Hitler’s biggest fan!
Once WW2 commenced Witzleben found favour with Hitler after some brilliant tactical maneuvering, which saw several French divisions surrender to his forces in the 1941 invasion of France. However he was forcibly retired in 1942 for criticizing the invasion of Russia which he deemed a tactical error, the official reason however was given as ill health. By 1944 he was heavily involved with the July 20th plotters and had been slotted to take command of the entire German army had the coup succeeded. God really loves a trier and this guy was not going to give up!
As we now know the plot failed and Witzleben was arrested and found guilty, he was slowly hanged by the use of piano wire suspended from a meat hook. I suppose it could have been worse, he could have been hung by Sgt John Woods!
There is also a B version of Witzleben with rectangular base so he can fit in with you Berlin 38 collectors. The serial number for this figure is BER025.
Witzleben is limited to 100 pieces, he makes quite an impressive set standing there in his full German officer regalia.
