Erich von Manstein was a Field Marshall in the German army during WW2. He helped devise plans for the invasion of France in 1940 and led the failed relief operation of the 6th army at Stalingrad. Manstein redeemed himself at the 3rd battle of Kharkov where his forces helped defeat 3 Russian armies and regain substantial territory. He was relieved of his command by Hitler in 1944 and was captured by the British in August 1945. Manstein was tried for war crimes and convicted, serving 4 years in total. After the war Manstein served as an adviser to the West German government in helping re-establish German armed forces.
