Arthur Wellesley, The Duke of Wellington, had succeeded in giving Napoleon a "Spanish Ulcer" in Spain and Portugal, often running rings around Napoleon's Marshals. At Waterloo the two would meet in battle for the first time, Wellington using his tried and true reverse slope tactics and Napoleon refusing to believe this British commander and his army were any match for him. Needless to say Wellington was underestimated by his opponent, which turned out to be a grave error. The British army had some seasoned, very capable commanders in Lord Uxbridge; the second-in-command and a superb cavalry leader, Thomas Picton; 5th Infantry Division commander, Lord Hill; II Corps Commander, and Hussey Vivian; head of the 6th Cavalry Brigade.
