The Compagnies franches de la Marine were the main French military organization used for the defense of New France (Canada) from 1683 to 1760. Organized under the department of the Navy, the units proved highly effective in the early stages of the French & Indian War - participating in raids on English settlements and in the defeat of English General Braddock’s forces.
