The violin is a bowed string musical instrument capable of producing a range of tones from low and sorrowful to a thrilling trill. A mainstay of western classical music, in the hands of a virtuoso, it is an important and revered instrument. But, when held in the right hands, it becomes a fiddle. Raucous, joyful, up-beat, and celebratory – fiddle music is the music of dance and merriment. The fiddle is part of many traditional folk styles from many different regions of the world including England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Italy, the Scandinavian countries, and the Jewish diaspora of Central and Eastern Europe where its distinctive style is known as klezmer.
