Like so many men, Pearl Harbor impelled George Herbert Walker Bush into war. He joined the United States Navy as a pilot and in 1942 engaged in one of the largest air battles of World War II: the Battle of the Philippine Sea. Through 1944, he flew 58 combat missions where he received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal and a Presidential Unit Citation.
