Jim Bowie was an adventurer and land speculator whose fame came in the death at the Battle of the Alamo. In 1835 conflict broke out in Texas between Anglo-Americans and Mexicans and the Mexican government. Bowie sided with the "Texicans" and participated in several skirmishes. At the Alamo, he served as commander of the volunteer forces but was stricken with typhoid. His illness left him unable to participate in the fight. He was shot and killed when the Mexican Army stormed the compound.
