The Black Brunswickers were raised in 1809 to fight Napoleon Bonaparte's occupation of Germany. These Brunswickers were distinctively attired in black wool uniforms, black leather belting and wore silver death heads on their shakos, quickly earning the nickname "The Black Legion" or "The Black Horde."

The elite 95th Rifles were trained as light infantry to act as skirmishers, sharpshooters and in other less conventional roles. They consistently performed with an lan and stubbornness that earned them respect and admiration throughout the army. The light infantry units did not carry standards or use drummers, but employed buglers to convey orders over the din of the battlefield.
