On the evening of 16th May 1943, nineteen Lancaster bombers and their crews departed Royal Air Force (RAF) Station Scampton in Lincolnshire, England for Nazi Germany. Not only did they attempt to fly deep into enemy territory on one of the most audacious raids of the Second World War, but they were destined also to become one of the greatest legends in world military aviation history – they were the dams raiders of 617 Squadron who became the "Dambusters."
