Happy New Year!
Welcome to the New Year Edition of Sierra Toy Soldier News, written on a chilly Sunday here in the Bay Area. We survived the Christmas Shopping Madness with our sanity virtually intact, we even managed to get one day off, yes, Christmas Day. After the hectic shopping season, we enjoyed every minute of our down time.
We know lots of people received toy soldiers for Christmas as we had the best December ever. We were particularly encouraged that many young teens coming to the store received a nice start to the collections. This is the future of our hobby. With all the manufacturers producing such fantastic new pieces we should be able to interest a lot of new people. New Year passed nice and peacefully, especially when watching the 3D version of Avatar. We hope all of you had a peaceful and happy Christmas and New Year.
Here is the Bay Area it has been earthquake week, we had about 3 earthquakes luckily not big ones over the last couple of days, and we did not feel the effects of the biggest one a 6.5 in Eureka which is at the top of Northern California. Here they have a saying that it feels like earthquake weather, when we have had no rain (which we badly need
) and it’s cloudy and overcast.
This year our plans include visiting Hong Kong again, the West Coaster, Chicago and if we can manage it the San Antonio Show, lots of upgrades to the web site, new enhancements to out Nugget Program and many events in our new store.
This month we have lots of exciting news from Britain's, King and Country, John Jenkins, Collectors Showcase, Figarti, Airfix, Corgi , Hobby Master and a few more.
Well we have lots of great news already for the New Year to tell you about, so we wish all of you a terrific and very peaceful 2010.

In 2009 the Nuggets Program was a great success and the great news is you all seemed to like it. So the
good news is that we are continuing it in 2010.
We were so busy that we could not issue the Nuggets out in December, so on the 16th we will be issuing a combined Nugget for November and December, which as always does not expire.
One other change we have made we hope you will like, is that all your purchases in December
2009 will count towards towards the $500 Qualification for the Sierra Nugget 2010 Program and will be counted when we issue the first 2010 Nuggets in February. Happy New Year!
What is the Sierra Nugget 2009 / 10 Program? It is simply a thank you program, where
each year your purchases from January to December will qualify you for automatic
membership, when you exceed $500 excluding shipping and taxes. There are no fees
or sign up required, and all our customers qualify. When you reach this first
milestone we email you a coupon (Nugget) which you can use. Then as you
continue to buy more, when additional milestones are met during the year, we
will send you additional nuggets.

-
LW014 -- "Walking Officer”
-
LW015 -- “Standing at Attention”
-
LW016 -- “Luftwaffe General Erhard Milch” Originally a friend of Herman
Goering, Milch owed a lot to the Reichsmarschall. He was thought to be
half-Jewish yet still achieved high rank in the Luftwaffe. Eventually he fell
out of favour but still managed to survive both the war and a brief spell as a
jailed war criminal. He died in 1972.
-
LW017 -- “Major Gunther Rall” Gunther Rall (1918-2009) was the third most
successful fighter ace in history with 275 victories (241 on the Eastern Front).
He flew over 600 combat missions, was shot down 8 times and wounded 3. He
claimed all of his victories in the Me.109. After the war he rejoined the “new”
Luftwaffe in 1955 rising to the rank of Generalleutnant before retiring. In 2004
he wrote his memoirs and died, aged 91 earlier in 2009.

Napoleonic - French
Artillery and Napoleon. - Arriving This Week!
Napoleon often said that “artillery is the key to most successful battles”. And,
to that effect K&C is releasing five very useful (and adaptable) sets add to
your gun line.
-
NA195 -- Cannon Set - Three different "Line Artillerymen" serve a classic
12-pounder cannon. All are wearing the uniform of 1813-1815.
-
NA196 --
Artillery Command Set - A standing saluting NCO awaits orders from his mounted
officer.
-
NA197 -- Alternative Gun Crew - These three extra figures can
be added or combined to form a larger gun crew or to serve NA198 "The French
Howitzer".
-
NA198 -- The French Howitzer - The short, stubby barrel is
easily recognized as a 6 inch Howitzer. It utilizes the same standard gun
carriage as the 12-pounder cannon.
-
NA197_198 -- French Howitzer Cannon
with Alternative Gun Crew
-
NA199 -- Classic Napoleon - Bonaparte in his
usual battlefield dress of gray greatcoat over his Chasseur a Cheval green
uniform. The Emperor surveys the scene.

Real West

WWII - British 8th
Army
Now
we’re back in the Western Desert of Egypt and Libya in 1942 and 1943.
-
EA040 -- Major Paddy Mayne S.A.S. - "Paddy" Mayne was one of the true legends of
WW2. The winner of no less than 4 D.S.O.'s he served with the Special Air
Service almost from the formation of the Regiment. Brave… bold… and sometimes
reckless "Paddy" Mayne was responsible for personally destroying over 130 German
and Italian aircraft on raids on Axis airfields. While fighting he could be
superb… out of the line he could be extremely difficult. A complex but very
brave soldier.
Here he’s dressed in typical casual S.A.S. Desert style. -
EA041 -- Universal Carrier - One of the war’s most famous British vehicles these
little carriers usually mounted a Bren Gun. This however had adopted the
heavier, belt-fed Vickers Machine Gun. In 7th.Armoured Division markings ("The
Desert Rats") it comes with 2 crew.
-
EA042 -- The Desert Bentley - How
this pre war "touring Bentley" came to end up with the S.A.S is interesting. It
was won in a poker game in Alexandria. Originally owned by a wealthy British
Cavalry officer he lost it (along with a great deal of money) to a friend of
"Paddy" Mayne's. When "Paddy" saw it he had S.A.S mechanics overhaul it, paint
it and customize it (guns and all) for Desert operations.
This version unlike
the original comes with a seated S.A.S. driver. Not to be missed

WWII - USAAF
Britain in 1943. K&C’s various Air Force series have, so far, focused mainly on
the German Luftwaffe and British Royal Air Force. Now it’s about time the YANKS
had a go as well. And here they are nine sets of figures and individuals plus an
iconic U.S. fighter plane.
-
AF003 -- Captain Brett Cutler - This good-looking officer with movie star style
is wearing the popular "Burberry Trench Coat" to ward off the damp and cold
British weather. He’s also sporting a crushed "50-Mission" hat as well.
-
AF004 -- Air Force MP’s - Two, at attention, U.S. Military Policemen, easily
identified by the arm brassards and all-white uniform accoutrements.
-
AF005 -- Crew Chief - A saluting NCO in service dress, clipboard in hand.
-
AF006 -- Army Air Corps Mechanics - Three different GI's going about their usual
tasks on a busy airfield.
-
AF007 -- Lt. Dick Rabb - By D. Day this young
fighter "jock" had 12 "kills" to his credit flying a plane called "HOT PANTS".
-
AF008 -- The New Boy - A newly-commissioned officer prepares to join his first
squadron, always a nervous time.
-
AF009 -- Flying Cowboy - Capt. Nick
"Cowboy" Magura with 11 "kills" demonstrates with his hands how he shot down his
latest victim.
-
AF010 -- Pointing MP - This "Snowdrop" indicating the way
around the airfield.
-
AF011 -- P.51B Mustang - This 1:30 scale polystone
and metal model pays tribute to what many consider to be the finest fighter
plane of WW2. The North American P.51 "Mustang". This "B" model aircraft is the
razor-back version and is in the personal markings of Major (later Colonel)
James H. Howard of the 354th.Fighter Group. Howard's "DING HAO" (The Best)
sports 6 German "kills" plus 6 Japanese ones. Maj. Howard flew with the American
"Flying Tigers" in China before America entered the war. He was the only U.S.
fighter pilot in the European Theatre of Operations to win the Congressional
Medal of Honour.
This model comes with "gear down" and a figure of Maj. Howard in the cockpit.
Just 500 of this particular model are being produced -- Planned Production

WWII - Kriegsmarine ( German Navy 1939 - 1945)
A new series with their first ever submarine (or U Boot we should say) plus 13 individual figures (including 3 special “personalities” ) and two very different vehicles.
-
KM001 -- “Flag Signaller” -- Whether on sea or on dry land the ability to make signals using only flags was a time-honoured naval tradition.
-
KM002 -- “KorvettenKapitan Gunther Prien -- Gunther Prien was one of the outstanding U Boat aces of the early part of WW2 and the first to win the coveted “Knight’s Cross”. His submarine U47 sank over 200,000 tons of Allied Shipping including the British battleship, “HMS Royal Oak” at anchor in Scapa Flow, Britain’s northern fleet anchorage.
Prien and U47 went missing on March 7, 1941 and no official record states how or why he and his U boat were lost. No trace of him or his boat has ever been found!
-
KM003 -- “Lookout” -- This Kriegsmarine sailor is on watch… padded life jacket, steel helmet and flash hood in place.
-
KM004 -- “Naval Field Police” -- All branches of the German armed forces had their own “chained-dogs” to enforce base security and discipline.
Our Petty Officer carries both a pistol and a sub-machine gun.
-
KM005 -- “Petty Officer with Whistle”
-
KM006 -- “Seaman on Guard” -- Part of a ship or naval base security detail.
-
KM007 -- “Patrolling Seaman” -- Same as above, but moving.
-
KM008 -- “Radioman”
-
KM009 -- “Sentry Duty (Parade Dress)-- This sailor is in summer parade uniform.
-
KM010(SL) -- “SEEHUND” -- The very latest “Strictly Limited” release… the type 127 U Boot “SEEHUND” (The Seal). This was the most successful of Nazi Germany’s mini submarines created during WW2.
Designed in 1944 and operated by a two-man crew the Kriegsmarine operated these boats during the closing nine months of the war.
Each midget U boat carried two “G7e torpedoes” on either side of the hull.
Although a total of 1,000 Seehunds were ordered just 285 entered service. Our K&C model is finished in a typical mottled “leopard” camouflage of sea green on a light sea gray background.
Each boat comes complete with its own special wheeled transport “cradle” and towing rod.
Just 750 of this unique little U Boat are being produced.
-
KM012 -- “Admiral Karl Donitz” -- A second K&C version of the venerated leader of the Kriegsmarine’s submarine arm. Here the admiral is dressed in his everyday working uniform and stands, arms folded, talking to one of his men.
-
KM013 -- “Korvettenkapitan Otto Kretschmer” -- Another of Donitz’s most famous U Boat aces, Kretschmer and boats under his command sank almost 300,000 tons of Allied shipping between 1939 and 1941 when he was captured.
He rejoined the Bundesmarine in 1955 finally retiring in 1965 as a “Flotilla Admiral”. He died in a boating accident in 1998.
-
KM014 -- “Kapitanleutnant… shouting” -- Wearing typical seagoing uniform this young officer is issuing orders.
-
KM015 -- “Submariner” -- Wearing a life vest and carrying his toolkit this U boat man is about to board his vessel.
-
KM016 -- “Kriegsmarine BMW327” -- This German naval officer sits comfortably in his BMW 327 Sports Car… Is he going on leave or just returning to duty?
-
KM017 -- “Sd.Kfz.9 Famo Recovery Vehicle” -- More than 2,500 of these heavy recovery vehicles were produced during the war in many various versions. Although most were used in Artillery or Armoured units a fair number were used by the Kriegsmarine to move heavy items around naval bases and dockyards.
This Famo is in field gray and is designed to pull and position the “SEEHUND” for launching and recovery. The Driver is included.
A camouflaged Wehrmacht version will also be available later.

WWII - DDay 1944 - American
-
DD122 -- "Jumping Screaming Eagles" -- Two 101st. Airborne paratroopers in all-new poses descend on their fully-deployed canopies… somewhere in Normandy in the early hours of June 6, 1944.
-
DD123 -- “Jumping All Americans” -- Another two… completely different… US 82nd. Airborne troopers float down somewhere near Ste. Mere Eglise… June 6, 1944.

- HK183
-- “The Clown” -- Wearing a giant paper mache mask this street clown is a familiar sight at any Chinese celebration.

COLLECTORS' CLUB SET #2 -- CHIEF SCAROUYADY - Battle On The Monongahela 1755
The
Oneida Chief SCAROUYADY, sometimes called MONACATOOTHA, as early as the 1740’s
acted with the Seneca Chief TANAGHEISSON (Half King) as a representative of the
Iroquois Confederacy among the Delaware, Shawnee, and other native peoples
living near the forks of the Ohio river.
Chief Scarouyady was one of a handful of Indians who accompanied the Braddock
expedition against Fort Duquesne in 1755.
His
son was killed in a friendly fire incident with British soldiers several days
before the Battle On The Monongahela. Never the less he was one of 8 Indians who
remained with Braddock as a scout. He was later noted to have said that he felt
the General held them in contempt and failed to listen to their advice.
Some of the details of Scarouyady’s distinctive tattoos and war marks have been
found in Captain Robert Orme’s notes and sketches.

-
JR-010 -- Highlander Standard Bearer # 2 - Cameron of Locheil’s Regiment
Cameron of Locheil’s Regiment was one of the first to be raised, and was always one of the strongest Jacobite units. It was generally regarded as an elite unit, even though it was originally very badly armed.
It was reported to be at least 700 strong at the Battle of Culloden, and two colours are known to have been present at the battle. One of which was the simple red and yellow barred colours. It was supposed to have been captured from the Camerons at Culloden, but was not included in the official list of trophies. The present whereabouts of the colours are unknown but in the late nineteenth century they were still preserved in a glass frame, but were wrongly identified as belonging to the Princes’ Lifeguards.
Jacobite Rebellion

Gordon at Khartoum
The Patched JIBBA was the costume of all Mahdists in the Sudan, warrior and civilian alike. It was an outward sign of adherence to the MAHDIYYA ( the Mahdist movement), and all who wore it were called ANSAR ("helpers"). The origin of the uniform is the short garment worn by the poor of the Nineteenth Century Sudan. It was made of rough cloth and it was frequently patched where it was torn. Originally the patches were a necessity and sewn on irregularly, but later became ordered and more ornamental. The Jibba became the Mahdist uniform by accident. It was only after the defeat of Hicks, that the Mahdi issued regulations concerning the uniform dress of his followers. The full uniform was a patched Jibba, sirival (white trousers), sayidan (sandals), Karaba (girdle of Straw), Taggia (hat or skull cap) , imam (turban), and sibba (beads). The imam was wrapped around the taggia and allowed to hang loose under the folds of the imam behind the left ear, while the rest was wrapped so that successive folds made an inverted "V" in the front.
The Fez, which was a sign of Turkish allegiance was strictly forbidden.

AA33416 - Westland Sea King HU.5, “100 Years of Naval Aviation” 771 NAS, Search and Rescue, RNAS Culdrose, 2009
In 2009, this Sea King was painted in its original blue colour to mark both the 100th year of naval aviation and the 40th anniversary of the Sea King entering naval service. Since delivery of the first aircraft in 1969, the Sea King has been at the forefront of UK military service, and 96 examples continue to be operated by both the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force. When Sea Kings first entered naval service they were all painted dark blue, and remained so until the late 80s, when following the Falklands War, they were repainted grey. Assigned to No. 771 Naval Air Sqn at RNAS Culdrose, and now flown as a Mark HU.5, XV648 first entered service in October 1969 as a HAS.Mk.1 and is the second oldest Sea King still in RN use.

Modern Aircraft
-
AA38601 -- BAC TSR-2, XR219, Flying Prototype, 1964
The Tactical Strike, Reconnaissance 2 (TSR-2) was an ill-fated Cold War strike aircraft developed by the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC) for the Royal Air Force in the early 1960s. It was designed to penetrate a well-defended forward battle area at low altitudes and very high speeds, and then attack high-value targets in the rear with close-in bomb runs and precision drops. TSR-2 included a number of advanced features that made it the highest performing aircraft of this type in the world.
The prototype TSR-2, XR219 flew from Boscombe Down on 27th September 1964 and the test programme soon made good progress despite some initial problems. However, a Labour Government had taken office shortly after the TSR-2's first flight and the writing was on the wall. XR219 was the only example to fly, the project being cancelled controversially in favour of the General Dynamics F111, a procurement that was later cancelled.
Thankfully the ordered destruction of all the TSR-2 prototypes did not happen. XR219, along with prototypes XR221 and XR223 were lost, having been taken to Shoeburyness range in Essex and used for target practice. The other two prototypes were rescued and XR220 was placed on display at RAF Cosford's Aerospace Museum, whilst XR222 was initially sent to the College of Aeronautics at Cranfield and is now on display at the Imperial War Museum at Duxford.
