Welcome to the February Edition of Sierra Toy Soldier News, written on Super Bowl Sunday here in the Bay Area. I wanted to do a Super Bowl Ad this year, but all the spots were filled with Budweiser, and Go Daddy Commercials. Oh well I will plan for next year.
We Californians like to complain about our lack of rain, now we are complaining about too much rain. Since our last news letter we have had storm, after storm, with a few more to come. Good news is the snowpack in the Sierra Mountains is looking great, and this is the source of our water for the year.. The trouble with rain is it brings mud slides especially to those areas affected by fire last year. Southern California will be particularly affected. Good news is no more earthquakes, for now!
Well this month it is the West Coaster show and we look forward to seeing lots of you. The sign up for the Sierra / K&C event has been very strong, could be our largest turn out yet. We still have a couple of spots left.
Build-a-Rama / Sierra Event:
We have added an event at 12.00 on Saturday, by invitation only. I think Terrain Mats are brilliant and a great way to build both small and large dioramas easily and quickly. Mark of Build-a-Rama will be demonstrating how to use these to create very effective and great looking Dioramas. Please see our events section for details.
Figarti: We are also co-hosting the Figarti event, on Saturday afternoon. Please see our events section for details.
What would you like us to bring! One of the hardest things for us is deciding what to pack for the West Coaster, please let us know if there is anything you would like to see.
Valentine’s Day, yes it is that time of year. This year it coincides with Chinese New Year. Forget the Diamonds, Chocolates and Flowers. That is so last year! This time give someone you love, a gift that will last a life time, yes a Toy Soldier. Nothing says you love someone more than giving the heart felt gift of a Toy Soldier. Do not miss the opportunity.
This month we have lots of exciting news from Britain's, Conte, King and Country, John Jenkins, Collectors Showcase, Figarti, Corgi, Hobby Master, and a few more.
Hope to see you at the West Coaster!

WWII - Kriegsmarine ( German Navy 1939 - 1945)
- Arriving Later This Week!
A new series with their first ever submarine (or U Boot we should say) plus 13 individual figures (including 3 special “personalities” ) and two very different vehicles.
-
KM001 -- “Flag Signaller” -- Whether on sea or on dry land the ability to make signals using only flags was a time-honoured naval tradition.
-
KM002 -- “KorvettenKapitan Gunther Prien -- Gunther Prien was one of the outstanding U Boat aces of the early part of WW2 and the first to win the coveted “Knight’s Cross”. His submarine U47 sank over 200,000 tons of Allied Shipping including the British battleship, “HMS Royal Oak” at anchor in Scapa Flow, Britain’s northern fleet anchorage.
Prien and U47 went missing on March 7, 1941 and no official record states how or why he and his U boat were lost. No trace of him or his boat has ever been found!
-
KM003 -- “Lookout” -- This Kriegsmarine sailor is on watch… padded life jacket, steel helmet and flash hood in place.
-
KM004 -- “Naval Field Police” -- All branches of the German armed forces had their own “chained-dogs” to enforce base security and discipline.
Our Petty Officer carries both a pistol and a sub-machine gun.
-
KM005 -- “Petty Officer with Whistle”
-
KM006 -- “Seaman on Guard” -- Part of a ship or naval base security detail.
-
KM007 -- “Patrolling Seaman” -- Same as above, but moving.
-
KM008 -- “Radioman”
-
KM009 -- “Sentry Duty (Parade Dress)-- This sailor is in summer parade uniform.
-
KM010(SL) -- “SEEHUND” -- The very latest “Strictly Limited” release… the type 127 U Boot “SEEHUND” (The Seal). This was the most successful of Nazi Germany’s mini submarines created during WW2.
Designed in 1944 and operated by a two-man crew the Kriegsmarine operated these boats during the closing nine months of the war.
Each midget U boat carried two “G7e torpedoes” on either side of the hull.
Although a total of 1,000 Seehunds were ordered just 285 entered service. Our K&C model is finished in a typical mottled “leopard” camouflage of sea green on a light sea gray background.
Each boat comes complete with its own special wheeled transport “cradle” and towing rod.
Just 750 of this unique little U Boat are being produced.
-
KM012 -- “Admiral Karl Donitz” -- A second K&C version of the venerated leader of the Kriegsmarine’s submarine arm. Here the admiral is dressed in his everyday working uniform and stands, arms folded, talking to one of his men.
-
KM013 -- “Korvettenkapitan Otto Kretschmer” -- Another of Donitz’s most famous U Boat aces, Kretschmer and boats under his command sank almost 300,000 tons of Allied shipping between 1939 and 1941 when he was captured.
He rejoined the Bundesmarine in 1955 finally retiring in 1965 as a “Flotilla Admiral”. He died in a boating accident in 1998.
-
KM014 -- “Kapitanleutnant… shouting” -- Wearing typical seagoing uniform this young officer is issuing orders.
-
KM015 -- “Submariner” -- Wearing a life vest and carrying his toolkit this U boat man is about to board his vessel.
-
KM016 -- “Kriegsmarine BMW327” -- This German naval officer sits comfortably in his BMW 327 Sports Car… Is he going on leave or just returning to duty?
-
KM017 -- “Sd.Kfz.9 Famo Recovery Vehicle” -- More than 2,500 of these heavy recovery vehicles were produced during the war in many various versions. Although most were used in Artillery or Armoured units a fair number were used by the Kriegsmarine to move heavy items around naval bases and dockyards.
This Famo is in field gray and is designed to pull and position the “SEEHUND” for launching and recovery. The Driver is included.
A camouflaged Wehrmacht version will also be available later.

"France, August 1914 and the country is once more at war with the hated Boches!"
K&C has mobilized its "L’Armee francaise" and les Poilus march off to battle resplendent in their
colorful uniforms of long blue coats, red pantaloons and scarlet and blue kepis. This first release focuses on the soldiers marching to the front as they would have appeared in those first days and weeks of the war to end all wars!
-
FW060 -- "General Joffre" - The ample figure of "Papa" Joffre inspired confidence in the public, his men and his fellow officers. Cool, calm and collected, Joffre was a "steady hand at the tiller" of the French Army in those early days. He is best known for regrouping the retreating Allied Armies and defeating the Germans at the First Battle of the Marne in 1914.
-
FW061 -- "General Foch" - Foch, was recognized by many, as the "most original mind in the French Army". Initially serving as a subordinate to Joffre he later became Supreme Commander of all Allied Armies in 1918.
-
FW062 -- Mounted French Officer - Proud and confident this mounted figure leads his troops forward.
-
FW063
-- Marching Officer - A bearded Lieutenant, sword in hand advances.
-
FW064 -- Marching Poilus - Three differently posed "Poilus" journey to the front.
-
FW065 -- Marching Soldier - A single "add-on" that can be collected in multiples to make a grand parade.
-
FW066 -- The Scout - A handsome little piece based on a Detaille illustration of a classic French Poilu.
-
FW067 -- Poilu attending to a General’s Horse - This pensive soldier holds the reins on his General’s mount.
-
FW068 -- Drum Major - Music plays an important part in virtually every army… including the French. This Drum Major instructs his musicians.
-
FW069 --Drummer
-
FW070 -- Bugler
Now the start of something a little different. This is the first of a unique series of poignant little vignettes depicting troops of three countries departing for the War.
-
FW071 -- "Auf Wiedersen" - This German "Soldat" tries to comfort his weeping fiancé as his Regiment departs.
-
FW072 -- "Au Revoir" - A different country… a different parting… As his wife holds his rifle this Poilu fondly cradles his small baby. Will he ever see them again?
-
FW073 -- "Goodbye-ee" - A Scottish soldier embraces his sweetheart as he goes off to war.
WWI

WWII - "COSSACKS"
Russian Cossack cavalry have the distinction of having fought both for and against Stalin’s Red Army. On the German side they fought with great
valor and ruthlessness especially on Anti-Partisan duties in Russia itself… and in the Balkans. At the end of the war most of these German Cossack units retreated westwards and surrendered to the British Forces. They were then handed over to the Russians… expecting and receiving little mercy.
-
WS142 -- Cossack Feldgendarmerie with Prisoner - A dismounted Cossack field policeman with an unfortunate Partisan suspect.
-
WS143 -- Mounted Cossack Officer - Wearing the traditional Cossack costume (with German badges) this officer, sabre in hand, is issuing orders.
-
WS144 -- Cossack Scout - Scanning the horizon for enemy activity.
-
WS145 -- Cossack holding Rifle - Looking to the right this Cossack, rifle held steady, is on patrol.
-
WS146 -- Cossack holding Rifle - Looking to the Left and with his rifle across the front of his saddle this is another member of the patrol.
-
WS147 -- Standing Cossack and Horse - This young Cossack is awaiting inspection.
-
WS148 -- Cossack Pointing - Another member of the patrol indicating while making his report.
-
WS149 - Dismounted Cossack NCO
-
WS150 -- "General Helmut Von Pannwitz" - This German cavalry officer was the commander of the Cossack Cavalry Corps. Extremely popular with his men he often wore Cossack uniform. After the war he chose to remain with his men when they were handed over to the Russians. He was executed by the Soviets in 1947.

WWII - Germany Army
-
WS134 -- PANZER III - Another alternative to the earlier released Afrika Korps version. This Panzer comes in the distinctive 3-colour camouflage typical of the mid war period. This particular model is suitable for both East and West Front displays.

WWII - "Meanwhile back at the BERGHOF"
Seven add-ons to the Rogue’s Gallery of attendees at Hitler’s little hideaway in the mountains.
-
LAH104 -- "REICH LABOUR LEADER" - Konstantin Hierl, Reicharbeitsfuhrer of the paramilitary German Labour Service giving the Nazi "Heil Hitler" salute.
-
LAH105 -- "Heinrich Himmler Relaxing" - One of the Third Reich’s most feared and hated men. Reichsfuhrer SS Himmler enjoying a cup of coffee while sitting on one of the Berghof’s sun loungers.
-
LAH106 -- "EVA BRAUN" - Hitler’s long-time mistress and, briefly, wife. She met him when only 17 and working as an assistant to his personal photographer. By all accounts, friendly, outgoing and totally disinterested in politics.
-
LAH107 -- "Reinhard Heydrich" - Another of the most feared and hated characters in the Third Reich. Doomed to meet a well-deserved end at the hands of Czech patriots in 1942.
-
LAH108 -- "Berghof Sun Loungers" - Just a little outdoor furniture for the patio of the Berghof. Accurately based on photographs of the real thing. Two in the set.
-
LAH109 -- "Baldur Von Schirach" - Head of the "Hitlerjugend" and "Gauleiter" of Vienna.
-
LAH110 -- "Dr. Robert Ley" - Another important man in the Third Reich and Head of the German Labour Front. He killed himself while awaiting trial in Nuremberg in 1945.

Scenic - "The Latest Desert Village"
Two more great (and useful looking) additions to the four already released pieces… Together they make a fine setting for Ancient Egypt… The Crusades… Napoleon in Egypt… WW2 North Africa… and even modern-day Iraq and Afghanistan.

-
JJCLUB-SET#3 -- Lt. William Dunbar - Battle On The Monongahela 1755
Probably the most requested figure by collectors of the Monongahela series is an officer to command the Grenadiers. "William Dunbar was a Lieutenant in the 44th Regiment of foot in 1755. He was apparently serving with the grenadier company and fought in the advance party at the Battle on the Monongahela. He was later employed in delivering provisions to the garrison at Fort Oswego in March 1756" Extract taken from "The Orderly Books Of Major General Edward Braddock" The basic unit of organization in the British regiment was the company. The normal strength of this company would be 40-60 men plus the officers. Typical organization would be:1 Captain, 1 Lieutenant, 1 Ensign, 2 Sergeants, 3 Corporals, 1-4 Musicians (drummers, fifers or pipers) and 30-60 privates.

Battle on Snowshoes
Jean-Baptiste Levreault de Langis de Montegron ( Langy) was known as Montcalm’s favourite scout. On November 2, 1757, Montcalm wrote to Governor Vaudreuil in praise of Langy, "Sieur Langis de Montegron has never ceased being used for the most interesting of scoutings, also the most laborious, and who has always distinguished himself." Especially after the famous Battle on Snowshoes, Langy appeared to become the nemesis of Roger's Rangers, constantly a thorn in their side. He has been praised as "the most famous of the French Canadian partisans," "the Ranger's most daring rival," and the "Ranger's most daring adversary." The last mention of Langy is in Pierre Pouchot's journal, "Memoirs on the Late War in North America Between France and England" '"This officer, the best leader of raids among the colonial troops, was unfortunately drowned while trying to cross a river in a canoe with two of his men".
Battle on Snowshoes

Jacobite Rebellion, 1745
-
JR-016 -- Highlander with 2 handed Sword and Grenadier - Combat Set #3
The two-handed sword, or CLAIDHEAM-MOHR (big sword) was the original Claymore, and was most common in the 16th and 17th centuries. As elsewhere in Europe, the two-handed sword was essentially a specialist weapon, mainly used by the gentry or bodyguards .Is blows were deadly. At the Battle of Killicrankie in 1689, these weapons were mainly responsible for the defeat of a small government army. The battlefield was covered with severed heads and limbs. It was reported that there were bodies cut in half at the waist or even split from the head downwards. This set includes the first of 6 grenadier figures for the 4th Regiment of Foot.

Gordon at Khartoum
-
SUD-003 - Madist with Flag
Flags in the Mahdiyya served 3 main purposes. They were symbols of rank, and in the early days of the revolt the Mahdi conferred flags on those who were his leading Emirs and supporters. The word flag “Rayya” also came to mean a division or a body of troops under a commander. The Flags were also instruments of propaganda. Almost all flags carried the proclamation that the Mahdi was the successor to Muhammad. The standard inscription which was mainly on one side of the flag, was as follows "O God, O Merciful One, O Compassionate One" "O Living One, O Subsisting One, O Lord of Majesty and Honour" "There is no god but God. Muhammad is the Apostle of God" "Muhammad al-Mahdi is the Successor of the Apostle of God"

February Releases
One of the terrific things about this hobby, is it never gets boring and is guaranteed to be always interesting. When you have very unique characters such as Richard Conte, you can be sure it will not be quiet for long. Always controversial and extremely creative, he has been busy once again. Last year when he decided to move his operation from Las Vegas to North Carolina, he went dark, and was out of touch. I had assumed it was because he was personally walking every toy soldier back to North Carolina. Apparently I was wrong, he has been busy recreating his line.
Richard tells me he has no plans to re-manufacture his old sets, so once they are gone, they are gone. Instead all his releases this year will be brand new sculpts, designs and manufacturing. He has a lot in the works. The first release is Zulu Wars. We have been able to obtain some of his plastic Spartan sets and Civil War sets and we will be listing these on the web site next week. So in the meantime we have restarted the relationship, are expecting a wild ride, and are hoping for a lot of fun too.
Zulu Wars 1879
Some things to note that we have discovered so far: Size they are 54mm / 1:32 Scale, and are the same height as the current range of
Britain's, Collectors Showcase and Frontline Zulu Figures, so they will work well together. Accessories from
Britain's and Frontline are compatible.

of the great recent inventions from diorama makers JG and also Build-a-Rama are
Terrain Mats. This are so easy and quick to use and are terrific at making
