To all subscribers welcome to the December / Holiday Edition of Sierra Toy Soldier News, written on a cold damp, rainy Sunday, here in Northern California. Almost feels like London. This week we have 3 rain storms coming in, with the big one, or so they say on Thursday, we are supposed to get the remnants of a Typhoon that effected Japan. If this one hits as planned, we will get up to 10 feet of new snow in the Sierra Mountains, just in time for Christmas. If you have never skied in California, it can be great.
The holiday season is well underway here in Los Gatos, we have the front of the store decorated as a Victorian Christmas, and promise we will take photos soon. We even have a train running in the window, great for the kids that have their noses hard up against the glass. We just finished the Los Gatos Christmas Parade where the main streets were closed for 3 hours to let all the floats, marchers and parade folk go by. They went a bit over the top this year, but it looked great.
If you are local please do not miss out on Bob Walkers Christmas Event at his home in San Jose. It is very magical event you will always remember, we always do. Details in our events section.
If you have not heard Christmas is just around the corner, in fact 17 days away. So we have updated our Holiday 2009 Shipping Guide, to hopefully make it easier this year. We are offering lots of great deals on Express Shipments. Remember every little and big kid deserves a box of toy soldiers this time of year.

Bob Walker - Open House and Christmas Event - December 20.
One
of the most memorable events for us every Christmas is Bob’s open house and
Christmas event, held locally in San Jose, CA.
Bob
has an old Victorian style house filled to the brim with Toy Soldiers, last
count about 15,000. The house was once owned by survivors of the Donner Party,
after they were rescued from being trapped in the snows of the Sierra Mountains.
The highlight for Bob is Christmas where the house is specially decorated, and
he opens it up to kids and grown ups alike.
Not
only do you have an opportunity for a really unique Christmas experience that
you will never forget, but for lovers of toy soldiers they have an opportunity
to see a unique collection.
The
event starts at 3.00pm on Sunday December 20.

What is the Sierra Nugget 2009 Program? It is simply a thank you program, where
each year your purchases from January to December will qualify you for automatic
membership, when you exceed $500 excluding shipping and taxes. There are no fees
or sign up required, and all our customers qualify. When you reach this first
milestone we email you a certificate (Nugget) which you can use. Then as you
continue to buy more, when additional milestones are met during the year, we
will send you additional nuggets.
Because we are usually maxxed out with all the holiday shipping, Nuggets for December may not be issued until January 16. We are going to do our best to get them out. Hope you will understand. For some of you this means a double lot in January.

“Sons of the
Empire” - New Series - In Stock Now
This is the beginning of an occasional new series that will focus on the
soldiers of the British Empire during its zenith between 1880 and the beginning
of the Fist World War. It will portray Infantry, Cavalry and, occasionally,
Artillery as they would have appeared on parade (and in the field) at that time.
This first small release shows three members of one of British India’s most
famous cavalry regiment’s, “Skinner’s Horse”
-
SOE001 -- Skinner’s Horse Indian Subahdar” Raised in 1803 by Capt. James
Skinner the Regiment, by 1903, became known as the 1st. Duke of York’s Own
Lancers (Skinner’s Horse). This first mounted figure shows a “Subahdar” (or
First Lieutenant) in parade dress.
-
SOE002 -- “Skinner’s Horse Lancer” Carrying a long, steel-tipped bamboo
lance complete with cavalry pennant this Lancer looks great alone, or in
multiples!
-
SOE003 -- “Skinner’s Horse Officer” All British Indian Army Regiments had a
mixture of British and Native Officers in charge. Many of the British officers
adopted colourful, full dress Indian Army uniform, especially for parades!
Sons of the Empire

“SHANGHAI 1926” -
US Navy - In Stock Now!
Following up last year’s release of pre WW2 US Navy figures has not been easy!
K&C hoped to find a cost-effective and safe way to produce the China River
Gunboat. Alas that has not proved possible at this time. However, the good news
is that they have designed and produced a great little “Steam Launch” that is
both sturdy and very affordable!
-
USN012 -- “US Navy Steam Launch” Built from the turn-of-the-century up
until the late 1920’s these little water craft served the U.S Fleet up until the
outbreak of WW2.
Utilized to ferry crew and supplies between ship to shore
and for patrol purposes these feisty little craft were a familiar sight from
Shanghai to the Panama Canal and all points in between. Our version comes
with a cox’n and a sailor manning the forward firing Lewis Gun. More sailors can
be added as passengers or as armed Naval Landing Parties. -
USN013 -- “Three Sitting Sailors” Dressed in their “winter-blues” these
three sailors are armed and ready for action. USN012 can accommodate 2 sets of 3
sitting sailors as well as more standing.
US Navy

“SHANGHAI 1926” -
China Marines - New Series - In Stock Now!
“Where the Navy goes the Marines are sure to go!” In support of our fighting
sailors are a great new batch of “CHINA MARINES”. During the tumultuous and
turbulent Twenties and Thirties at least one Battalion of US Marines was always
stationed in China. Here are the reinforcements for the “China Station”.
-
USMC001 -- “Officer” A young, confident USMC officer, swagger stick in
hand, assess the situation.
-
USMC002 -- “Shotgun” Standing holding his pump-action trench shotgun this
young Marine corporal is afraid of nothing and noone!
-
USMC003 -- “Pistol Marksman” With either rifle or pistol all Marines are
expected to be “Marksmen”. This campaign-hatted Marine squeezes off a round from
his COLT 1911 Automatic.
-
USMC004 -- “Marine Sniper” Fitted with a telescopic sight this
Springfield-armed sniper prepares to pick off an enemy combatant.
-
USMC005 -- “Lewis Gunner” A Marine Lance Corporal takes a break from
“humping” that big, heavy Lewis Gun.
-
USMC006 -- “Staff Sergeant”
-
USMC007 -- “On Guard” A standing Marine, with bayonet fixed stands at ease,
but still alert.
-
USMC008 -- “Gunny with Tommy Gun” -- A walking Gunnery Sergeant armed with a
Thompson Sub Machine Gun.
-
USMC009 -- “.30 cal. Machine Gunner Manning his water-cooled, .30 cal.
Browning machine gun this Marine watches the situation develop.
-
USMC010 -- “Rifleman” Every Marine, no matter what his specialty, is, first
and foremost a Marine Rifleman.
China Marines

“Australian Light
Horse at Beersheba”.
We
first saw these in Chicago and though they looked magnificent. We would hihly
recommend the movie The Lighthorsemen made in 1987, this Australian feature film
is about the men of a World War I light horse unit involved in the Battle of
Beersheeba (Oct. 31, 1917). The film is based on a true story and most of the
characters in the film were based on real people.
-
AL001 -- “Officer with Pistol” Webley service revolver in hand the Light
Horse major leads his men straight towards the Turkish trenches.
-
AL002 -- “Bugler”
-
AL003 -- “Charging with Rifle” Lee Enfield in one hand reins in the other
this Aussie is in the forefront of probably the world’s last great cavalry
charge!
-
AL004 -- “Charging with Bayonet”(to the front) The classic image of the
Lighthorseman, bayonet pointing towards the enemy, a sight that would frighten
any “Johnny Turk”.
-
AL005 -- “Charging with Bayonet” (to the rear)
-
AL006 -- “Dismounted and still fighting” His dead mount at his feet this
Lighthorseman still has plenty of Aussie fighting spirit.
-
AL007A -- “Flagbearer with Red Ensign” This earlier Australian National flag
had a red background instead of the present-day blue.
-
AL007B -- “Flagbearer with Squadron Guidon”
Please Note:These first few figures are just the “advance party” of a major
WW1 Middle Eastern range which will include Turkish Forces, Irregular Forces and
other British Imperial Troops. Fighting Turkish Infantry will be released in the
latter part of the first quarter of 2010.
Australian Light Horse

Afrika Korps --
“ROMMEL’S LONG-AWAITED & MUCH-NEEDED REINFORCEMENTS”.
At
long last the “Desert Fox” has something to smile about.
-
AK052 -- “FunkKraftwagen Afrika Korps” This desert version of the recent
BBG release was always planned as a “double-release” and here it is. A
dust-weathered, mottled-brown on sand camouflaged radio truck is a welcome
addition to Rommel’s Signals unit. Our vehicle comes with an Afrika Korps
driver.
-
AK054 -- “Afrika Korps Newsreel Crew” Rommel (and Goebbels) always
recognized the value of good publicity for the folks back home. Here a standing,
mike in hand, German War Correspondent makes his report. Filming nearby is his
cameraman complete with movie camera on tripod.
-
AK055 -- “Machine Gun Crew” Watched over by a kneeling NCO this MG34 gunner
and a rifleman put down some “heavy fire” on the enemy.
-
AK056 -- “Rifle Section” Two AK riflemen in action.
-
AK057 -- “Attack Group” Firing his Schmeisser Machine Pistol from the hip
this NCO also gives out orders to a kneeling, firing rifleman.
-
AK058 (SL) -- “ROMMEL’S DESERT TAXI” During the war in North Africa, Erwin
Rommel believed in being in as many places as he could, in meeting as many of
his men and commanders as possible and seeing for himself what the situation was
really like, either in or behind the frontline. He made ample use of the
Luftwaffe’s resources to get him all over the battlefield and his command.
Among his most useful “Desert Taxis”, as he often referred to them, was the
Messerschmitt 108 “Taifun”. Designed and developed in the 1930's by Willy
Messerschmitt this little 4-seater was the fore runner of the world-famous
Me.109 fighter. The Afrika Korps versions is in typical worn and weathered
Luftwaffe tropical paint scheme of dark mottle over sand colour. Through the
clear canopy you can see a fully detailed cockpit. Outside stands Rommel’s
personal pilot and a brand-new portrait study of the great Field Marshall
himself. Just 999 of “Rommel’s Desert Taxi” will be available and it comes
in its own special box with individually numbered leaflet. -
AK030-01 -- “Panzer II Tank” This is a re-release of AK030 Panzer II Tank
only this time it’s just the tank, no Italian soldiers with it.
Afrika Korps

A

-

-

LW012 -- “Standing Officer Saluting”
-
LW013 -- “Standing Airman w/ Rifle”
-
LW014 -- "Walking Officer”
-
LW015 -- “Standing at Attention”
-
LW016 -- “Luftwaffe General Erhard Milch” Originally a friend of Herman
Goering, Milch owed a lot to the Reichsmarschall. He was thought to be
half-Jewish yet still achieved high rank in the Luftwaffe. Eventually he fell
out of favour but still managed to survive both the war and a brief spell as a
jailed war criminal. He died in 1972.
-
LW017 -- “Major Gunther Rall” Gunther Rall (1918-2009) was the third most
successful fighter ace in history with 275 victories (241 on the Eastern Front).
He flew over 600 combat missions, was shot down 8 times and wounded 3. He
claimed all of his victories in the Me.109. After the war he rejoined the “new”
Luftwaffe in 1955 rising to the rank of Generalleutnant before retiring. In 2004
he wrote his memoirs and died, aged 91 earlier in 2009.

Napolonic - French
Artillery and Napoleon.
Napoleon often said that “artillery is the key to most successful battles”. And,
to that effect K&C is releasing five very useful (and adaptable) sets add to
your gun line.
-
NA195 -- Cannon Set - Three different "Line Artillerymen" serve a classic
12-pounder cannon. All are wearing the uniform of 1813-1815.
-
NA196 --
Artillery Command Set - A standing saluting NCO awaits orders from his mounted
officer.
-
NA197 -- Alternative Gun Crew - These three extra figures can
be added or combined to form a larger gun crew or to serve NA198 "The French
Howitzer".
-
NA198 -- The French Howitzer - The short, stubby barrel is
easily recognized as a 6 inch Howitzer. It utilizes the same standard gun
carriage as the 12-pounder cannon.
-
NA197_198 -- French Howitzer Cannon
with Alternative Gun Crew
-
NA199 -- Classic Napoleon - Bonaparte in his
usual battlefield dress of gray greatcoat over his Chasseur a Cheval green
uniform. The Emperor surveys the scene.

his carbine.

Real West

WWII - British 8th
Army
Now
we’re back in the Western Desert of Egypt and Libya in 1942 and 1943.
-
EA040 -- Major Paddy Mayne S.A.S. - "Paddy" Mayne was one of the true legends of
WW2. The winner of no less than 4 D.S.O.'s he served with the Special Air
Service almost from the formation of the Regiment. Brave… bold… and sometimes
reckless "Paddy" Mayne was responsible for personally destroying over 130 German
and Italian aircraft on raids on Axis airfields. While fighting he could be
superb… out of the line he could be extremely difficult. A complex but very
brave soldier.
Here he’s dressed in typical casual S.A.S. Desert style. -
EA041 -- Universal Carrier - One of the war’s most famous British vehicles these
little carriers usually mounted a Bren Gun. This however had adopted the
heavier, belt-fed Vickers Machine Gun. In 7th.Armoured Division markings ("The
Desert Rats") it comes with 2 crew.
-
EA042 -- The Desert Bentley - How
this pre war "touring Bentley" came to end up with the S.A.S is interesting. It
was won in a poker game in Alexandria. Originally owned by a wealthy British
Cavalry officer he lost it (along with a great deal of money) to a friend of
"Paddy" Mayne's. When "Paddy" saw it he had S.A.S mechanics overhaul it, paint
it and customize it (guns and all) for Desert operations.
This version unlike
the original comes with a seated S.A.S. driver. Not to be missed
WWII
- British 8th Army

WWII - USAAF
Britain in 1943. K&C’s various Air Force series have, so far, focused mainly on
the German Luftwaffe and British Royal Air Force. Now it’s about time the YANKS
had a go as well. And here they are nine sets of figures and individuals plus an
iconic U.S. fighter plane.
-
AF003 -- Captain Brett Cutler - This good-looking officer with movie star style
is wearing the popular "Burberry Trench Coat" to ward off the damp and cold
British weather. He’s also sporting a crushed "50-Mission" hat as well.
-
AF004 -- Air Force MP’s - Two, at attention, U.S. Military Policemen, easily
identified by the arm brassards and all-white uniform accoutrements.
-
AF005 -- Crew Chief - A saluting NCO in service dress, clipboard in hand.
-
AF006 -- Army Air Corps Mechanics - Three different GI's going about their usual
tasks on a busy airfield.
-
AF007 -- Lt. Dick Rabb - By D. Day this young
fighter "jock" had 12 "kills" to his credit flying a plane called "HOT PANTS".
-
AF008 -- The New Boy - A newly-commissioned officer prepares to join his first
squadron, always a nervous time.
-
AF009 -- Flying Cowboy - Capt. Nick
"Cowboy" Magura with 11 "kills" demonstrates with his hands how he shot down his
latest victim.
-
AF010 -- Pointing MP - This "Snowdrop" indicating the way
around the airfield.
-
AF011 -- P.51B Mustang - This 1:30 scale polystone
and metal model pays tribute to what many consider to be the finest fighter
plane of WW2. The North American P.51 "Mustang". This "B" model aircraft is the
razor-back version and is in the personal markings of Major (later Colonel)
James H. Howard of the 354th.Fighter Group. Howard's "DING HAO" (The Best)
sports 6 German "kills" plus 6 Japanese ones. Maj. Howard flew with the American
"Flying Tigers" in China before America entered the war. He was the only U.S.
fighter pilot in the European Theatre of Operations to win the Congressional
Medal of Honour.
This model comes with "gear down" and a figure of Maj. Howard in the cockpit.
Just 500 of this particular model are being produced -- Planned Production

COLLECTORS' CLUB SET #2 -- CHIEF SCAROUYADY - Battle On The Monongahela 1755
The
Oneida Chief SCAROUYADY, sometimes called MONACATOOTHA, as early as the 1740’s
acted with the Seneca Chief TANAGHEISSON (Half King) as a representative of the
Iroquois Confederacy among the Delaware, Shawnee, and other native peoples
living near the forks of the Ohio river.
Chief Scarouyady was one of a handful of Indians who accompanied the Braddock
expedition against Fort Duquesne in 1755.
His
son was killed in a friendly fire incident with British soldiers several days
before the Battle On The Monongahela. Never the less he was one of 8 Indians who
remained with Braddock as a scout. He was later noted to have said that he felt
the General held them in contempt and failed to listen to their advice.
Some of the details of Scarouyady’s distinctive tattoos and war marks have been
found in Captain Robert Orme’s notes and sketches.

Gordon at Khartoum
– New Series
This introductory vignette based on the painting by George William Joy, an Irish
painter born in 1844. He was probably best known for his painting of the death
of General Charles Gordon, a British national hero and icon, who died defending
Khartoum against the Mahdi. (painted in 1885 and currently on display in the
Leeds City Art Gallery).
In
the early 1880’s, a Muslim uprising began in the Sudan, threatening Egypt and
British colonial interests. The Leader of the revolt was Muhammad Ahmad who
called himself the “Mahdi” or expected one. His object was to restore Muslim
practices and eradicate foreign influences. Through awe and fear, the Mahdi
managed to gather thousands of loyal followers. Ultimately, Great Britain was
obliged to address the situation, and did so by sending a national hero to
Khartoum, General Charles Gordon, known as “Chinese” Gordon for his leadership
in suppressing the Taiping Uprising in China some years earlier.
Charles Gordon was seen as a “Christian Soldier”, who as previous Governor
General of Equatoria and then the full Sudan, ended slavery. He knew the bible
well and had even managed to locate the site of the Genesis “Garden of Eden”. As
a soldier, Gordon was a military engineer, which would serve him well when
forced to fortify Khartoum.
Gordon was also fiercely independent and whose personal view of justice
conflicted with political prerogatives. Stubborn, insubordinate, and frequently
arrogant, he travelled up the Nile River to evacuate the Europeans and Egyptians
despite having publicly criticized this policy in the British press only weeks
before his assignment was posted. Gordons own agenda was to defend Khartoum
against the Mahdi.
By
1884 it became apparent that Gordon was not leaving Khartoum. The prospect of
his death and the loss of the Sudan prompted national outcry in Britain,
including Queen Victoria who pressured Prime Minister Gladstone into sending a
relief force. On March 25th, the Queen wrote to the Secretary of War, Lord
Hartington, “Gordon is in danger: you are bound to try and save him”

Jacobite Rebellion
1745
This set presents the final two figures based on the famous David Morier
painting “An Incident in the Rebellion of 1745”.
Barrells’ Regiment was to lose up to 6 officers. Accounts describe the fate of
one particular officer Lord Robert Kerr. “Who not observing his men’s giving
back, remained a few yards forward alone. He had struck his pike into the body
of a highland officer; but before he could disengage himself, was surrounded,
and cut to pieces.”
This will also be the first of 5 hand to hand sets to be released over the next
6 months.

Raid on St Francis
The
capture of prisoners during a patrol was an important method of gathering
information and intelligence.
Although the fate of those taken prisoner on both sides was often fatal.
Prisoners taken by Rangers could suffer immediate execution if the Rangers found
themselves ambushed . When a hidden enemy party opened fire on Rogers’ column on
21st July 1757, the wounded private Thomas Brown,”retir’d into the rear, to the
prisoner I had taken on the lake, knock’d him on the head and killed him, lest
he should escape and give information to the enemy.”
By
1760 Rogers had also employed the “Stockbridge Indians” as trusted scouts. These
Indians came from the area around Stockbridge, Massachusetts. “To aid the
identification of non-hostile Indians, friendly Indians were to tie a red garter
or cloth around the end of their musket barrels”
