The 13th Légère had a fearsome reputation having fought in many of Napoleon's victories. At about 6pm on the battlefield of Waterloo Marshal Ney took command of the 13th's three strong battalions, more than 1800 men, and lead a final attack on the farm at the centre of the battlefield 'La Haie Sainte'. They managed to smash open the barricades and break open holes in the cannon battered walls. Climbing onto the roof of the barn they poured a terrible rain of musket balls into the defenders who had been surrounded all afternoon and had finally run out of ammunition. After a last terrible fight with swords and bayonets, the 13th occupied the farm. Napoleon could finally bring his cannon forward to the very centre of the battlefield.
