The first flag for this collection represents the standard from Charles Stewart of Ardshael’s Appin Regiment. A yellow saltire on a blue field.
The regiment joined the Jacobite army in August 1745, and its first engagement was at the Battle of Prestonpans on 21st September 1745.
Almost one year later at The Battle of Culloden, Ardsheal and his regiment of 150 men, described as “followers of Appin”, stood on the right of the Jacobite front line with only Lochiel’s Camerons on their right.
This last Highland charge saw the Camerons break the British 4th Regiment of foot.
Ardshael’s men who initially had charged straight forward, seeing the collapse of Barrell’s 4th Foot, veared right to follow the Camerons in an attempt to exploit the breakthrough.
As a result the British regiment , Monro’s 37th Foot who were originally directly to the front of the “followers of Appin” were able to fire several volleys into the flank of Ardshael’s men, causing many casualties on the charging highlanders , whom narrowly avoided losing their colors.
