Buford’s cavalry brigade were the first Union forces to clash with Heth’s Confederates on July 1 as they came up over Macpherson’s Ridge headed for the town of Gettysburg. Buford and his boys did not make it easy for the Confederate division, holding them just long enough for Union infantry to arrive and reinforce the area.
