Major Smith and Lt. Curling's guns were light 7-pounders, muzzle-loading rifled steel barrels which had been designed as mountain guns to be carried packed away on mules. In the tough terrain of southern Africa, it had been necessary to mount them on the conventional carriages of the heavier 9-pounder gun.
