Medical Series
At the start of the American Civil War there were not even 100 surgeons in all of the Union Army. The ambulance did not even exist. Care of the wounded on the battlefield was often an afterthought with the weakest and least disciplined soldiers tasked with clearing the wounded. |

114th Pennsylvania Zouaves
- Updated December 12, 2011!
At Gettysburg on July 2, 1863 General Daniel Sickles ordered
his men to move out ahead of the main Union line into what he
felt was better ground. This action left the Union line broken at
the exact moment rebels under General John Bell Hood slammed
into them, putting the entire Union position in peril. In the midst
of this could be found the 114th Pennsylvania Zouaves near the
Sherfy house on the Emmitsburg Road.
